Uttaranchal renamed Uttarakhand

Uttaranchal, which became the twenty-seventh Indian state on 9th November 2000, was renamed as Uttarakhand in January 2007,
according to the wishes of a large section of its population.

The region is traditionally reffered to as Uttarakhand in Hindu scriptures and old literature, a term which derives from the Sanskrit for  'northern country'.
