Trouble in Fiji

In December 2006, Fijian military commander Frank Bainimarama announced that he had taken control of Fiji.

Bainimarama  appointed Jona Senilagakali as interim Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, who had won his second term in a general election earlier 2006.

Subsequent to the coup d'etat, Fiji was suspended from the commonwealth of Nations. In January 2007, Frank Bainimarama restored executive authority to the nation's ousted president Ratu Josefa lloilo.

Days later, Ratu Josefa lloilo appointed Commodore Frank Bainimarama prime minister of Fiji. Fiji lifted the state of emergency which was imposed during the 2006 coup d'etat, in June 2007.
